The character of Toby

What makes the dog, Toby, an important character in the story? What are some ways the director could show a dog on stage? What challenges exist when a real animal is a character in a play? How can a director solve some of these challenges?

The dog Toby is an important character in the book because he helps Jon get through with the nightmares. The director could show Toby by having a real dog on stage that is trained in acting. Some problems with that is that the dog might not listen as well as a human dressed as a dog. Well, the director could solve some of the dog problems by getting a human actor as the dog. But, that wouldn't be as cool as the real dog... though the dog might get scared with the sounds of the sinisteeds and the fright of being watched by hundreds of kids.

Toby is an important character because he is kind of a comfort to John. Although he hardly shows it, John is probably beginning to like Toby and to trust him as a friend.
The director might show Toby as a puppet, but then again, Toby means a lot in the story so I don't know if a puppet could portray him. They could have someone dressed up as a dog or even a real dog, maybe.
I think when a director uses animals such as dogs in plays it's hard to "create" them or get someone or something to play them because u need something to look real, and not too fake, but there are also risks with using a real dog, because the dog could possibly bite or bark during a scene, which would mess up the play.

Toby is an important character because I think he is really bringing the good out of John. The problem with having a real dog on stage and in a play is that they might not take good directions and might just have a mind of it's own. I think that the director should show a real dog that is an professional actor. The director really might dress a human in a brown dog outfit.

Toby is an important character because he supports the other characters emotionally. He keeps the woman
company and supports John with good memories, even if John himself doesn't know it. I think they will portray Toby as a real dog because nothing else would represent the love and loyalty Toby shows.

Toby is an important character because John really likes the dog sometimes and the dog sometimes makes John happy. Toby supports the John and makes him feel good and makes him smile when he is in a very bad mood which he is in a bad mood usually often throughout the story. Toby is a comfort to john. The director could show Toby by having a real dog trained be Toby or just a puppet. I also think that the director will also show Toby as a person in a dog suit in the play.

The dog Toby is a very important character. He helps by being in his dreams. The director could have a dog on stage if it was well trained. But they don't have that many obedient dogs that are going to go in a play. If the set doesn't have a well trained dog, they can always dress up a kid and go on from there. Not better than a real dog. Dogs will have a really hard time with surrounding sounds neither would kids. A real dog would really be cool in a play. I've never seen one. But I think it would be cool and different.

I think Toby is an important character because it shows that John can be kind and that he can love. I also think that Toby is an important character because in the beginning it's shows how lonely the old lady is and that she is kind. The Director could show this by having a trained dog.

Toby is an important character that says a lot about John's character. John says that he hates Toby, even though he really has started to bond with him.I believe that John says he hates Toby because in his past home life, feelings were pretty frowned upon- if you cried, you got hit. I would think Toby would be portrayed in the play by a puppet.

Toby is an important character in the book. I think this because he really brings the good and positive side out of Jon. There are several ways to show a dog on stage. One way is having a human dressing up as Toby. I think it would be hard to have a real animal as a character in a play. I think this because you can tell the animal to do something but you aren't 100% positive that the animal will do it. A director can solve this problem by using a human to play as the dog. He can also solve this problem by having a really trained dog play a character in a play.

Having a real animal on stage brings many complications. There's always the chance of the animal not listening of course! And when the animal doesn't listen, it can bring many problems, not only to the script but to the staging itself. There's always a possibility that the animal gets scared of the lights or the sound during the play, and does not cooperate. There are many problems with having a real animal on stage.

Toby is an important character. John says that he doesn't like Toby, even though he really has started to bond and play with him with him. I believe that John says he hates Toby because he mom and abused him so he is taking out his anger by saying he hates toby , feelings were pretty frowned upon- if you cried, you got hit.

I think Toby is an important character because it shows John he doesn't need to be so mad. Toby becomes one of John's only friends. I think the theater will you costumes to dress up a person to look like a dog. This may be a problem for the director to be able to make the person look and act like dog.

I think that the play could represent Toby with a stuffed dog because Toby isn't very important so far but he is still in the story. The problems of having a real animal in the play is that they might get excited from all the people and use the bathroom on stage. Or they might be lazy and fall asleep (like Toby would) lol. It would be very difficult to have a real live animal on stage.

SPOILER DOWN BELOW!!!
When you think about dogs and Gossamer the phrase "Dog is a man's best friend" shouldn't come to mind at the beginning. John at first hates Toby, then learns to like him. I think that Toby is a good way for John to learn something he never felt; Love.

Having a dog on stage is a very hard task to follow through with because you have to communicate with the dog on what to do and where to go. Although, Toby is necessary in the play because he helps John get through his dreams. He never shows it though, but deep inside, he loves that dog.

In the story, Toby is important because he sometimes shows a good side of John. The director of the play might use either an actor or a real dog to play Toby. The challenge with a real dog is that dogs can not talk back to you. They don't understand english. The director can hire an actor to let the dog know and understand what to do after someone says a certain thing.

Some challenges that the director might face are that the real dog can't understand the director so the dog playing Toby would do anything he wants. And since he is a important character the play would not work successfully. If the director used a puppet to play Toby , they could control him.

Toby is an important character because he helps John get through tough times. He comforts him and gives him something to do. The director could use a real dog but the only thing wrong with that is that if the dog got distracted. The director could prevent this from happening by using a human actor dressed as a dog . The human could do all the things Toby did in the story.

I think that Toby is an important character in the play because the effect he is having on John is important. Toby shows the change through John. You can tell because John is nicer to Toby as the book progresses. At first, he was very mean to Toby. But later, he starts being nicer to Toby. Change is shown there. If Toby wasn't there, we couldn't tell as much that John was changing. We would probably still think that John was the same person, besides the fact that he does chores now.
If we can't have a real dog on stage, that would be OK. I think it's hard having a real live animal on stage for a play. If the animal suddenly turns wild or gets out of control, people might get hurt or start screaming and things would turn chaotic. That is a problem with animals. But it is possible that things would go smoothly with an animal. I think if there were a real dog to play as Toby, the dog would have to be really trained and would have to e used to people.
To perhaps fix the problem with Toby, the director could probably get a human actor to play Toby or a puppet. I think it would be hard to have a puppet as a dog also, because you would have to have someone be the puppeteer of course!
I think it wold be interesting to see if a real dog was Toby or if a puppet was. Whatever will be Toby, I'm excited to see what happens! :)

The dog Toby is a very important character, because it shows how John is beginning to be lighter and more happy than angry. The dog strengthens John and the old woman, even if the woman is very strong. The director could have a real dog or a human in a dog suit. Some problems with having a real dog up on stage is it may not listen to you or it may be confused and just lay down or stand in one area. It may see the children and want to jump on them. It would be better if they got a trained dog, like from the movies. They can solve this problem by getting a human in a dog suit or train a dog really well.

I think Tobi is important, because it realeases some of John's stress and it will be a human that looks like a dog, because having a real dog on stage makes it unpredictable to control and to stop that would be to bribe it. So thats not a good idea.

I think they will use a image of a dog on the back with a projector on the wall.the dog is important in the book because he shows how john is getting nicer as the he stays with the lady in stead of being at home with his.

The dog Toby is an important character because he is what made John more descriptive. He helped Jon surpass the nightmares inflicted by the sinisteeds. Toby helps us understand all the characters more and better. Even though Jon may act mean to Toby he is actually nice to him. I think John doesn't like to show his sensitive side because he might feel vulnerable. He doesn't want to get hurt.

Toby is an important character in the story because he comforts and helps out John when he's at the old woman's house. He also helps him out with the nightmares by being there to comfort him. Some ways the director can show a dog on stage is by it being a puppet or a real dog. But a problem with using a real dog is that it could get scared, people could be allergic, or it could miss behave on stage.

I think that Toby is an important character because he shows how John's character develops. For example, John used to take away food just as Toby was about to eat it, but later in the story he started purposely leaving food out for Toby.

The dog could be a puppet. It would be very difficult to use a real dog in a play. A real dog could be scared by an audience. A real dog might draw too much attention when you should be watching the actors. I think a real dog should not be used. The dog is important to the story. There must be a dog of some kind.
